Sandy Beach is one of the best-known resort areas in Puerto Peñasco. Its long shoreline, beachfront resorts, roaming vendors, and water activities make it an easy place to spend an entire day.
During our recent visits, my family tried several activities without having to travel far from the beach. These were five of our favorites.
Availability and prices can change with the season, weather, and individual vendor. Always confirm the price, duration, and what is included before agreeing to an activity.
1. Take a Family Banana-Boat Ride
Our banana-boat ride was one of the most memorable activities we tried at Sandy Beach. We brought our seven-year-old and three-year-old, and the operator went slowly to make the ride more comfortable for them. The best surprise came when we spotted dolphins just offshore.
Price is approximately $10 USD per person, with a three person minimum. The boats fit up to 10 people.
2. Rent a Jet Ski
Jet-ski rentals are often available directly along Sandy Beach, especially near the resort areas. They can be a fun way to experience the Sea of Cortez when the water is calm. Average prices are $30 USD per hour.
3. Get Your Hair Braided
Several beach vendors offer hair-braiding services, with styles ranging from a few small braids to a fuller look with colorful extensions.
I paid 500 pesos for braids that included optional colored extensions. Your price will depend on the vendor, style, length, and added materials.
4. Shop and Eat From Beach Vendors
The variety of vendors is part of the Sandy Beach experience. Depending on the day, you may encounter people selling jewelry, shells, souvenirs, clothing, and other items.
Food and drink vendors may also offer fresh fruit, tacos, seafood, and refreshments.
I would recommend carrying small bills if you plane to shop. A friendly "no, gracias" is enough when you are not interested.
5. Explore the Tide Pools at Low Tide
When the tide recedes, exposed rocky areas and shallow pools can offer a closer look at Puerto Peñasco’s sea life. We've seen sea slugs, blue crabs, and small fish. Check the tide schedule before setting out, wear water shoes with good traction, and watch for slippery or sharp rocks.
Tips for Enjoying Activities at Sandy Beach
- Confirm the price and currency before booking an activity
- Use properly fitted life vests
- Keep children within reach near the water.
- Avoid motorized activities when the water is rough.
- Protect your phone and money from water and sand (the tide can rise quickly!)
- Check the tide schedule and weather before exploring
- Leave marine life undisturbed.
Make a Day of It
Sandy Beach offers more than a place to sit beside the water. Our family has enjoyed fast-paced activities, quiet tide-pool walks, local food, and conversations with vendors, all along the same stretch of shoreline.
Choose the experiences that suit your group, confirm the details before paying, and leave some room for unexpected moments.
