Adventures
Things to do in Rocky Point.
The Sea of Cortez was once called "the world's aquarium" by Jacques Cousteau. Here's how to get out on it — and what to do when you're back on land.
Sport fishing
Half- and full-day charters chase yellowtail, dorado, grouper, and sea bass. Captains launch out of the Old Port and Cholla Bay. Best months: April through October.
Snorkeling & diving
Bird Island (Isla San Jorge) is a short panga ride out — sea lion colonies, reef fish, and the clearest water of the year between May and October.
Sailing & sunset cruises
Catamarans run sunset sails out of Sandy Beach most evenings — usually a couple of hours with drinks and snacks included. Easy, gorgeous, very popular.
ATV & dune rides
The Sonoran Desert meets the sea here, and the dunes north of town are made for it. Local outfitters rent ATVs, RZRs, and lead guided tours.
Kayaking & paddleboarding
Calmest water is early morning before the wind picks up. Cholla Bay at high tide is a favorite paddle.
Jet skis & banana boats
Rentals are everywhere along Sandy Beach. Negotiate the rate, ask about life jackets, and stick to the buoy line.
Whale watching
January through March, finback and humpback whales pass through the upper Sea of Cortez. A few captains run dedicated whale-watching pangas in season.
CEDO eco-tours
The Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans runs naturalist-led tide-pool walks and estuary tours — easily the best kid-and-adult learning activity in town.
