Frequently asked questions.

The essentials for planning your first (or fifth) trip.

  • Rocky Point — officially Puerto Peñasco — sits on the northern coast of the Sea of Cortez in the Mexican state of Sonora, just south of the Arizona border.

  • Rocky Point is widely considered one of the safer destinations in northern Mexico, with a dedicated tourist police force and a strong, established visitor economy. Travelers should still use the same common sense they would on any beach trip.

  • About 210 miles (340 km) — roughly a 4-hour drive from Phoenix, including the border crossing at Lukeville / Sonoyta.

  • Yes. U.S. and Canadian auto policies are not valid in Mexico. You'll need Mexican liability insurance at minimum, easily purchased online before your trip.

  • Most visitors prefer October through May for pleasant temperatures, sunny days, and comfortable evenings. If you plan to spend most of your time in the water, late spring and early fall offer warm beach weather without the extreme summer heat. June through September is the hottest season, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C), but it's also popular for boating, swimming, and family vacations.

  • Yes. U.S. dollars are widely accepted across restaurants, shops, and hotels. Most places will give change in pesos. We strongly recommend paying in pesos when possible to support the local economy.

  • Sandy Beach is the classic stretch fronting the main resorts, while Las Conchas and Playa Encanto offer quieter, more residential coastline. Cholla Bay is a favorite for tide pools at low tide.
